DONUT SHIELDS
Sold in sets of 2
These protective shields are made from a solid billet of 6061 T6 aluminum. These units
weigh around three ounces apiece instead of nearly a pound
each for the fabricated metal cages I have seen come through my shop on customer
gearboxes. I checked the balance on one of the heavy steel units and it nearly hopped
of the machine.
Once you have observed or experienced a donut blowout, you will fully appreciate the
necessity of this product. I have seen gearboxes completely destroyed, bell
housings cracked and even stud/mounting flanges ripped off the back of the block.
When the drive shaft gets loose it can rip the sheet metal tunnel apart. I watched a
Giulietta pole vault down the front straight at VIR. It started with some little pieces
chunking out from under the car. He never got out of the throttle, the rear of the car
rose about four feet in the air and pieces went flying everywhere. It was about ten car
lengths ahead and I sat strapped upright in my seat as the entire driveshaft
assembly assembly came out cart wheeling . It took a Spruell bounce just in time
and only nicked the roll bar. My crew saw the workers drag it off the track and said the pinion
was snatched out of the differential still attached.
