1966 was the inception of the SCCA Trans Am Championship Series. Horst Kwech and his co-driver, Gaston Andrey finished 1st overall in the points as well as 1st in the U-2 class in this Alfa Romeo.  If there had been a driver's championship in 1966, Kwech would have won it, having scored more points than any other driver in either class!

Horst Kwech put this car into the record book winning the first ever SCCA TransAm Series in 1966.  It presented Alfa Romeo the Under 2.0  Manufacturer's Championship. This car and driver combination was so dominant that Horst was able to run enough  SCCA National Races to earn a bid to the CSPRRC ( Champion Spark Plug Road Racing Championship, aka theRunoffs now).  In November, after the Trans Am season was over he went to Riverside, CA and won the B-Sedan National Championship race. This Riverside win was so magnificent that Horst was also awarded the Presidents Cup, the most prestigious award in SCCA Racing to this day.
